Honolulu, HI – Residents across parts of Hawaii’s western islands are being urged to stay alert as a Flood Watch remains in effect for Kauai, Niihau, and Oahu through late Monday night, with heavy rain capable of triggering flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, excessive rainfall may lead to flash flooding across low-lying areas, flood-prone roadways, and urban neighborhoods. The watch includes nearly all zones on Kauai and Oahu, from coastal areas to interior mountains, as well as the island of Niihau.

Forecasters say a cold front is expected to stall over the western Hawaiian Islands through Monday, increasing rainfall across the region. Showers could become locally heavy at times, with isolated thunderstorms possible, raising the risk of rapid runoff and overflowing streams.

Officials warn that some roads may become impassable due to water accumulation, especially in areas known for poor drainage. Urban locations could see more significant flooding, including potential property damage, as rain falls faster than storm systems can drain away.

The Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding but does not guarantee it will occur. However, weather officials emphasize that heavy downpours in Hawaii can quickly overwhelm streams and drainage systems, sometimes with little warning.

Residents are encouraged to closely monitor weather updates and be prepared to act quickly if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways, and those living in flood-prone areas should review safety plans in advance.

Additional updates and safety guidance are available from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve through Monday night.
