Honolulu, Hawaii – Flooding could develop rapidly across Hawaii starting tonight, with multiple rounds of heavy rain threatening roads, homes, and low-lying areas through Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a Flood Watch remains in effect statewide, covering Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and the Big Island. A strengthening kona low is pulling deep tropical moisture into the islands, setting the stage for repeated periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.
The most intense rain is expected through Saturday across Oahu, including Honolulu Metro, the North Shore, and leeward communities, where storm drains could quickly become overwhelmed. On Maui, areas like Kahului, Kihei, and windward slopes of Haleakala face increased runoff risk, especially near streams and steep terrain. Flooding concerns will shift to the Big Island by Sunday, particularly in Hilo, Kona, and interior regions where prolonged rainfall could trigger rapid rises in waterways.
Flooding may lead to road closures, especially along low-lying routes and areas prone to poor drainage. Landslides are also possible in mountainous regions, including along the Koolau Range and windward slopes.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways, monitor local alerts, and be prepared to act quickly if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Secure outdoor items and have emergency plans ready in case conditions worsen.
Heavy rain will continue in waves through Sunday afternoon, with additional warnings likely as the kona storm strengthens and shifts north early next week.
