Honolulu, HI – Residents along Oahu’s North Shore are being told to leave immediately as officials warn the Wahiawa Dam could fail at any moment, sending potentially life-threatening flooding downstream within minutes.
According to the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service, a Red “Evacuate Now” alert remains in effect for Waialua and Haleiwa, including areas between Puuiki Street and Kamehameha Highway. Officials said at 9 a.m. Friday the dam had not failed but showed signs of imminent risk, prompting urgent evacuations and heavy outbound traffic.
Emergency maps show evacuation routes stretching from Wahiawa toward central Oahu, with shelters opening inland. Authorities warn low-lying areas and stream zones could flood rapidly if the structure gives way.
In central Oahu, flooding has already disrupted infrastructure. Honolulu Police issued a traffic advisory at 11:26 a.m. Friday closing Waipahu Street between Malakole Street due to concerns the Waikele Stream bridge may be compromised. Officers have blocked access in both directions, forcing detours and slowing commutes across the area.
Drivers should avoid Waipahu and nearby routes, while North Shore residents are urged to leave immediately, bring essential supplies, and follow official evacuation routes. Emergency officials say conditions could change quickly, with additional alerts possible through Friday afternoon.
