Hastings, NE – Strong thunderstorms could develop by late Wednesday afternoon across southern Nebraska, bringing damaging wind gusts and large hail that may impact travel and outdoor plans into the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a marginal risk for severe weather is in place Wednesday from late afternoon into the overnight hours, with storms capable of producing wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph and hail up to quarter size. The greatest risk will focus near and south of the Nebraska-Kansas border.

Cities including Hastings, Kearney, and Grand Island may see isolated storms Wednesday evening, though the strongest activity is expected to remain just south and southeast of the area along the frontal boundary.

By Thursday afternoon into the evening, the severe threat becomes more organized, with hail potential increasing to between 1 and 1.5 inches in diameter and wind gusts again reaching up to 60 mph. Areas along Highway 6 and south of Interstate 80 face the highest chance for stronger storms.

While tornado risk remains low, residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, including sudden wind shifts and localized damage. Secure outdoor items and stay weather-aware, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Storm chances will continue into Thursday night, with additional updates likely as the system evolves.
