HASTINGS, Neb. – Thunderstorms moving in from the west could bring isolated wind gusts near 60 mph to parts of central and western Nebraska Wednesday afternoon and early evening, prompting a marginal risk for severe weather near and west of Highway 183.

According to the National Weather Service office in Hastings, showers and thunderstorms are expected to arrive in the Highway 183 corridor and areas to the west during the 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. time frame. Forecasters said the primary hazard is strong wind, with isolated gusts potentially reaching around 60 mph.

The weather service described the threat level as marginal, meaning severe weather is possible but expected to be limited in coverage and duration. Still, officials urged residents to stay weather aware as storms develop and move through.

Drivers along Highway 183 and nearby routes could encounter sudden changes in conditions during the late afternoon commute, including brief heavy rain and strong crosswinds. High-profile vehicles may be especially vulnerable to wind bursts if storms intensify.

Residents are advised to secure lightweight outdoor items, such as trash bins and patio furniture, before storms arrive. People caught outdoors should be ready to move inside quickly if thunder is heard or winds increase. Power interruptions can occur when strong gusts bring down tree limbs or affect utility lines.

For students, young workers, and commuters, the highest-impact window aligns with after-school activities and the early evening drive, when storms may be most likely to produce the strongest gusts.

The National Weather Service said the best chances for storms will be between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday. Residents should monitor updated forecasts and any statements issued later in the day as timing and storm strength can change quickly.
