Hastings, Neb. – Severe thunderstorms could rumble across Nebraska Friday afternoon into tonight as an upper-level disturbance and surface cold front sweep through the state. The National Weather Service warns some storms may turn strong to severe, with heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized hail possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, today marks the hottest stretch of the coming week, with highs reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s before cooler air pushes in. Thunderstorm chances will remain on and off into early next week, though the most widespread activity is expected Friday evening.

Communities from Grand Island to Kearney and Hastings should be prepared for changing road conditions and possible delays due to heavy downpours and reduced visibility. Winds may gust up to 20 mph, increasing risks for travelers along I-80 and surrounding highways. Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and avoid driving through flooded roads.

By Saturday, highs fall into the 70s and 80s, with additional scattered storms. Sunday and Monday will feel significantly cooler, with highs only in the low to mid-70s — a noticeable shift from Friday’s heat.

Thunderstorm chances linger into midweek, and the Weather Service says more alerts could be issued depending on storm development.
