Hastings, Nebraska – Severe thunderstorms could roll across much of Nebraska Friday evening through early Saturday morning, with the strongest activity likely between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, parts of the state fall under a slight risk (level 2 of 5) and marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather. While not all storms are expected to become severe, the most intense cells could drop quarter-sized hail and produce wind gusts near 60 miles per hour—especially in the southwest portion of the state.
Communities including McCook, Holdrege, and Red Cloud may experience the brunt of the activity, with the risk tapering off as storms move northeast. Drivers are urged to avoid nighttime travel in affected areas due to limited visibility, slick roads, and potential wind damage.
Residents should secure outdoor items, keep cell phones charged, and have a way to receive weather alerts overnight. This system follows a relatively quiet stretch of spring weather and may be the region’s first significant round of storms this month.
Severe weather risks may linger into early Saturday. Additional updates are expected Friday afternoon.
