HASTINGS, Neb. – Residents across central Nebraska will face dangerous heat Saturday as temperatures climb to 98°F with heat index values reaching 103°F. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, warning of increased risks of heat-related illness for anyone outdoors during the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service office in Hastings, south winds at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph will add to the oppressive conditions. Emergency officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

The heat will persist through Sunday, with highs around 94°F before storm chances return late Sunday night into Monday. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms could bring brief relief, especially for counties along the Platte River valley. By Tuesday, skies turn clear with highs in the low 90s before a cooler pattern arrives midweek.

Travelers on U.S. Highway 6 and I-80 should remain alert for sudden changes in conditions, especially if storms develop overnight Sunday. Officials stress that heat remains the primary threat until storms move in.

Advisories remain in effect through Saturday evening, with updates expected if storms intensify Sunday into Monday.
