Hastings, Nebraska – A sharp change in weather is expected across south-central Nebraska Sunday as a strong cold front brings an abrupt end to unseasonably warm conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, Saturday will remain warm and quiet, with high temperatures climbing into the lower to middle 60s across much of the region under light southwest winds. Conditions will change quickly late tonight and Sunday as a cold front moves through the area.
The front is expected to arrive early Sunday, ushering in strong northwest winds and rapidly falling temperatures throughout the day. Sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph are forecast, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph at times, especially during the late morning and afternoon hours.
A band of light snow is expected to develop Sunday morning as colder air spreads in. Snowfall amounts are forecast to be light, generally a dusting to a few tenths of an inch, but the combination of falling snow and strong winds may lead to brief periods of reduced visibility. Forecasters warn that visibility could drop for several hours even where accumulations remain minimal.
Temperatures will fall steadily through the day Sunday, dropping from morning readings in the 40s into the 20s and lower 30s by afternoon. The gusty winds will make it feel significantly colder and may create difficult travel conditions, particularly on open roadways.
The National Weather Service notes that the primary impacts from this system will come from strong winds and blowing snow, rather than heavy accumulation. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially in rural areas where visibility can change rapidly.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, prepare for colder conditions, and monitor forecast updates as the front moves through the region Sunday.
