HASTINGS, Neb. – A gusty and unseasonably warm weekend is on tap for central Nebraska before a sharp fall cooldown arrives early next week. Winds could gust near 30 mph Saturday and Sunday as highs soar into the mid-80s ahead of a cold front.
According to the National Weather Service office in Hastings, a few light showers are possible late Friday night into early Saturday morning, but most of the area will stay dry until the front moves through Sunday night. The system will bring much cooler air, with Monday’s highs tumbling into the 60s and breezy north winds adding a crisp fall feel.
Forecasters expect Sunday to be the warmest day, with temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal before the front pushes through. Drivers on I-80 and US-281 should prepare for strong crosswinds and brief low visibility from blowing dust in open fields. Outdoor plans Saturday and Sunday will remain mostly dry but windy; securing loose decorations or yard items is advised.
By Monday, much cooler and calmer weather will settle in, continuing through midweek. Scattered showers could redevelop Tuesday as the front stalls over the Plains, though widespread rain isn’t expected. Residents are encouraged to check updates from the NWS Hastings office as fall temperatures return.
