Hastings, NE – The first widespread frost of the season is set to blanket much of south-central Nebraska tonight, as clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to tumble into the low and mid-30s. A Frost Advisory takes effect at 10 p.m. and continues through 10 a.m. Wednesday, with a few spots potentially dipping to near or just below freezing by sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service office in Hastings, the coldest air will settle into low-lying and rural areas, where readings may reach as low as 30°F by early morning. Light winds and dry air will promote efficient cooling overnight, creating ideal conditions for frost formation across the entire advisory area, which includes Hastings, Kearney, Grand Island, and McCook.

Sensitive vegetation, potted plants, and late-season crops could be damaged or killed if left uncovered. The NWS advises residents to cover garden plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and bring potted flowers indoors before temperatures drop late this evening.

According to forecasters, this cold spell will be brief. Sunshine and lighter winds will return Wednesday afternoon, pushing highs back into the upper 50s to low 60s. However, another chilly night is expected Wednesday night with additional patchy frost possible before a gradual warm-up arrives to end the week.

This marks a typical seasonal transition for the central Plains, as late October often delivers the first true taste of cold air before winter sets in.
