Hastings, Neb. – Storm chances are set to return across Nebraska and north-central Kansas early this week, with the National Weather Service warning that some storms Monday afternoon could bring hail and damaging winds. Temperatures will climb into the upper 70s to low 80s on Sunday before the stronger storm threat develops Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, scattered thunderstorms are possible late Monday afternoon into the evening, with the strongest storms capable of producing large hail and gusts over 50 mph. The threat will extend overnight and continue into Tuesday.
Cities including Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney should prepare for possible localized flooding on roads, downed branches, and brief power outages if storms intensify. Motorists traveling on I-80 and Highways 6 and 281 may encounter reduced visibility in heavy rain.
Sunday will remain calm with partly cloudy skies, but residents are advised to secure outdoor items and charge devices ahead of Monday’s storm window. Northern winds will cool highs into the mid-60s by Tuesday, offering temporary relief from the early week heat.
