HASTINGS, Neb. – South winds are ushering in a stretch of unseasonably warm fall weather across south-central Nebraska through the weekend, with highs climbing into the 70s and even low 80s by Sunday. The mild pattern will hold through early next week before the next cold front approaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, dry and mostly sunny days will dominate Thursday through Sunday, with only a slight chance for a few light showers late Friday night into Saturday morning. Overnight lows will stay mild in the 50s to near 60, well above normal for mid-October.

The agency noted that temperatures could briefly top 80 degrees Sunday afternoon ahead of the next frontal system. Winds will remain from the south to southeast at 10–15 mph, adding to the warming trend but keeping fire danger somewhat elevated in open areas.

Residents planning outdoor events or travel along I-80 and U.S. 281 can expect good driving conditions and mostly dry roads through the weekend. The mild nights will also reduce frost concerns for late-season crops and gardens. However, forecasters advise securing lightweight outdoor items due to occasional gusty breezes.

Conditions are expected to turn cooler early next week as a front moves through, bringing a return to more typical fall temperatures by midweek.
