Hastings, NE – Nebraskans should prepare for the strongest winds since June this weekend, with the National Weather Service (NWS) Hastings forecasting gusts up to 50 mph on Saturday, October 4.

According to the NWS, southerly winds are expected to sustain speeds of 25–35 mph, with gusts between 40–50 mph during the afternoon and evening hours. While the conditions are not anticipated to meet High Wind Warning criteria, forecasters caution that it will likely be the windiest day since June 22.

The weather service also issued concerns about fire risk. Relative humidity is expected to fall as low as 26–40 percent, creating favorable conditions for wildfires, particularly in harvest-related fields. While the grasses in the region are currently “greener than usual” for early October, the NWS emphasized that dry cropland could still fuel dangerous fire activity.

Officials are urging residents, especially those working in agriculture, to use extra caution with equipment and avoid any activities that might trigger a fire.

Travelers may also face challenges, as high winds could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles.

This developing weather system will affect much of south-central and central Nebraska. The NWS recommends monitoring updates for any changes to Saturday’s forecast.
