Unseasonably warm temperatures are expected across central Nebraska today, making this New Year’s Eve one of the warmest in decades, according to the National Weather Service in Hastings.
NWS forecasters report that high temperatures today will range from 54 to 61 degrees, potentially making it the warmest New Year’s Eve since 1999 for both Hastings and Grand Island. Daytime conditions will remain dry with northwest winds between 10 and 20 mph, supporting mild but breezy weather as 2025 comes to a close.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will fall sharply after sunset. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the 18 to 25 degree range, with northeast winds at 5 to 10 mph developing late tonight. Those attending outdoor New Year’s Eve celebrations should prepare for a significant temperature change between evening and midnight.
Despite the cooldown, no precipitation is expected, and road conditions are forecast to remain favorable across central Nebraska. Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 34, U.S. Highway 281, and Highway 6 are expected to stay dry through the overnight period and into New Year’s Day.
The National Weather Service notes that New Year’s Day (Thursday) will begin cooler and cloudier, but the chill will be brief. While daytime temperatures will be slightly lower than today, conditions will remain seasonable, and a warming trend is expected to return heading into the weekend, with highs climbing back into the 50s and 60s across much of the region.
Long-range forecasts show no significant precipitation chances through the upcoming week, continuing the extended dry pattern.
For travelers, service workers, and holiday celebrants, the primary weather concern will be rapid cooling after sunset, rather than hazardous road conditions, making layered clothing essential for late-night plans.
