Hastings, NE – Residents across central Nebraska should prepare for severe weather this afternoon as thunderstorms move into the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings.
Forecasters say storms are expected to develop west of Highway 183 beginning around 1 p.m. Sunday, September 14, before tracking eastward through the evening hours. The greatest risk window will continue until about 11 p.m.
According to the NWS, storms may become strong to severe, producing hail up to the size of half dollars and wind gusts approaching 60 miles per hour. Locally heavy rainfall is also possible, which could create hazardous driving conditions.
The severe risk level for much of central Nebraska has been classified as “2” on the SPC’s scale, indicating a heightened local threat of large hail and damaging winds. While the risk of tornadoes is currently low, forecasters urge caution and stress that conditions could change quickly as storms intensify.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings through the evening. Outdoor activities should be adjusted with safety in mind, and motorists should be alert for rapidly changing road conditions.
Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve overnight with decreasing storm activity. Monday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with highs in the 80s before another round of thunderstorms returns Tuesday afternoon.
