Hastings, Nebraska – Two rounds of light snow are expected to affect south-central Nebraska from today through Saturday, creating nuisance travel impacts despite limited snowfall totals.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, each round of snow is expected to produce less than 1 inch of accumulation, but timing, wind, and cold temperatures could lead to slick spots on area roadways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 281.

The first round of snow is expected to move through the region Friday morning through mid-afternoon, spreading south across the area. North to northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts near 25 mph, may briefly reduce visibility during periods of snowfall. Accumulations will generally remain light, but untreated roads and bridges could become slick at times.

After a brief lull late Friday afternoon and evening, a second round of light snow is forecast to arrive Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening, moving west to east across the region. South winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected with this system. While snowfall amounts again remain under an inch, the timing may affect weekend travel, especially during the evening hours.

Although snowfall totals are not high enough to trigger winter weather advisories at this time, forecasters stress that even light snow can cause travel issues, particularly when combined with gusty winds and cold pavement temperatures.

In addition to the snow, bitterly cold conditions are expected late tonight into Saturday morning. Temperatures dropping below zero may result in wind chill values between -10°F and -20°F, increasing the risk of frostbite for those outdoors for extended periods.

Drivers traveling along I-80, Highway 34, and Highway 281 are urged to slow down, watch for slick spots, and allow extra time, especially during periods of active snowfall.
