Hastings, Nebraska – Patchy freezing drizzle and light snow may impact travel across south-central Nebraska this morning, with the highest risk focused on southern portions of the region before conditions improve later today.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, freezing drizzle and light snow are possible during the morning hours, particularly across southern areas. While accumulations are expected to remain light, even small amounts of freezing drizzle can lead to slick spots on roadways, especially during the early commute.

Forecasters say conditions will clear this afternoon, with highs reaching the upper 30s to upper 40s, helping reduce lingering travel issues. However, bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads may remain slippery until pavement temperatures rise.

Major travel corridors potentially affected include Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 6, and U.S. Highway 30, impacting travel through Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Holdrege, and nearby communities. Drivers are advised to remain cautious on shaded stretches of roadway where ice may be harder to see.

A significant warming trend arrives Thursday, with highs expected to climb into the upper 50s to mid-60s, accompanied by breezy northwest winds. Friday is forecast to remain mostly sunny, with temperatures holding in the 50s to lower 60s, followed by another breezy but mild day Saturday.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while today’s winter weather impacts should be brief, rapid temperature changes can still create localized hazards during the transition period. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speed on wet or icy roads and allow extra stopping distance this morning.

Students, commuters, and early-shift workers traveling along I-80 and nearby highways should allow extra travel time until conditions improve.

This outlook is based on forecast guidance issued Wednesday morning and will be updated if freezing drizzle becomes more widespread.
