Hastings, Nebraska – A Red Flag Warning is in effect from Noon until 8 PM Tuesday as strong winds and low humidity create critical fire weather conditions across south central Nebraska.

According to the US National Weather Service in Hastings, sustained west to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected Tuesday afternoon, with gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph. At the same time, minimum relative humidity values are forecast to drop between 10 and 25 percent, with the lowest readings west of Highway 281.

Forecast data indicates some communities could see humidity values as low as 14 to 15 percent during peak heating hours. Combined with dry fuels, the conditions support rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior.

The Red Flag Warning includes areas along Interstate 80 near Grand Island and Kearney, US-281 near Hastings, and portions of north central Kansas. Fire officials warn that any ignition could spread quickly under the forecast wind speeds.

Outdoor burning is not recommended. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could produce sparks, including welding or equipment use in dry grasses.

Winds are expected to gradually decrease after sunset, with humidity values recovering Tuesday evening as the warning expires at 8 PM.

The conditions may be particularly relevant for agricultural operations, rural landowners, and highway travelers during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service Hastings office and follow guidance from local emergency management officials.
