Hastings, Nebraska – Another round of light snow is moving across south-central Nebraska today, bringing the potential for minor travel issues as gusty winds develop this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, an upper-level disturbance sliding southeast through the region is producing additional chances for light snow, mainly affecting south-central Nebraska. The best chances for snowfall are expected to spread from west to east from late this morning through the afternoon and early evening hours.
Snowfall accumulations are forecast to remain under one inch for most locations, though a few isolated spots could approach around one inch. While amounts are light, officials note that even minimal snowfall can create travel concerns when combined with wind.
Southerly winds are expected to increase through the day, with sustained speeds near 15 to 20 mph and gusts approaching 25 mph, especially for areas along and west of U.S. Highway 281. Any snow falling during these windy conditions could lead to brief reductions in visibility and slick road surfaces.
Motorists traveling along U.S. Highway 281, U.S. Highway 6, and Interstate 80 are advised to use caution, particularly during the afternoon and early evening when snow and wind may overlap. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads may become slick despite limited accumulation.
Forecasters emphasized that this system is not expected to produce significant snowfall, but “nuisance” travel impacts remain possible due to timing and wind-driven snow.
This update may be especially relevant for afternoon commuters, agricultural workers, and regional travelers, as conditions may change quickly over short distances.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service throughout the day and adjust travel plans if conditions deteriorate.
