Hastings, Nebraska – A wave of extreme heat followed by dangerous thunderstorms will impact Nebraska on Tuesday, with temperatures surging into the upper 90s and severe storms threatening high winds and evening disruptions.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a complex of thunderstorms is set to develop over north-central Nebraska late Tuesday afternoon, spreading southeast after 6 p.m. The main hazard is damaging wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, posing risks for power outages and hazardous travel on major highways including I-80, Highway 281, and US-6.
Communities from Grand Island to Kearney should prepare for rapidly changing weather, including hot, windy conditions during the day, followed by fast-moving storms in the evening. Cooler air will arrive Wednesday as a cold front pushes south, dropping highs into the 70s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain likely, especially by Wednesday night, which could impact outdoor activities and commutes.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during high wind periods, and charge devices in case of outages.
More rain chances persist late week, though intensity is expected to decrease. Further advisories are possible as conditions evolve.
