Hastings, Nebraska – A mix of freezing rain, freezing drizzle, rain, and snow is possible across south-central Nebraska today as a weather system moves in from the west to northwest.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, precipitation chances increase through the morning and afternoon Friday, with timing and type varying by location. Forecast graphics indicate the highest chances for precipitation developing late morning into the afternoon, continuing into the evening hours.
Communities including Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, and Ord may see periods of rain transitioning to freezing rain or snow as temperatures fluctuate near freezing. Farther north and west, snow and wintry mix appear more likely, while areas farther south may see lighter precipitation amounts overall.
Probability charts from the National Weather Service show precipitation chances generally ranging from 15 to 40 percent through the afternoon and evening, with some of the higher probabilities occurring during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
No specific accumulation amounts were provided in the update, but even light freezing rain or drizzle could create slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier bursts of precipitation or where freezing rain develops.
The timing may be especially relevant for commuters and students traveling during the afternoon and evening hours, as changing precipitation types could lead to localized hazardous conditions.
