Hastings, Nebraska – Snow and dangerously cold conditions are expected to impact south-central Nebraska and portions of north-central Kansas through the weekend, with travel conditions deteriorating tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for parts of north-central Kansas, including Rooks, Osborne, and Mitchell counties, where 5 to 8 inches of snow are possible. A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded north into far southern Nebraska, where snowfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected.
Forecasters say snow showers will increase in coverage Friday, with at least 1 to 2 inches of accumulation expected across much of the region. The bulk of accumulating snow is forecast to fall between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, though lighter snow may linger into Saturday night, especially across southern areas.
Snowfall probabilities show the highest confidence for heavier totals south of Interstate 80, while northern Nebraska counties are expected to see lighter accumulations. Winds of 5 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, may cause minor blowing and drifting of snow, particularly Friday night.
In addition to snowfall, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through Monday morning. Overnight and morning wind chills of -15 to -30 degrees are expected, with the coldest conditions occurring late Friday night and again Sunday night. Officials warn that prolonged exposure to the cold may be dangerous for people, pets, and livestock.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution if travel is necessary, and prepare for reduced visibility and slick roads. Residents are also encouraged to limit time outdoors and monitor forecast updates as winter weather impacts continue through the weekend.
