Hartford, Conn. – Residents across much of Connecticut should limit outdoor activity Wednesday as ground-level ozone is expected to reach unhealthy levels between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m., prompting an Air Quality Action Day.
According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, elevated ozone will affect Hartford, Windsor Locks, Torrington, Oakville, New Milford, Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, and Northern Middlesex counties. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions, may experience breathing difficulties with even moderate exertion outdoors.
Transportation officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary driving and refuel vehicles after sunset to help reduce ozone formation. Those who work outdoors should take frequent breaks and shift strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Pets can also be affected and should have access to shade and fresh water.
Ozone concentrations are expected to improve overnight, but similar conditions may return later this week if temperatures remain high. Residents can monitor updates at ct.gov/deep/aqi.
