Hartford, Conn. – Heavy snow will begin falling across northern Connecticut by 4 p.m. Sunday, with 12 to 18 inches expected before the storm ends around 7 a.m. Tuesday. Wind gusts up to 50 mph Sunday night into Monday could down tree limbs and power lines, creating scattered outages and near-whiteout road conditions during the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for Hartford, Tolland, and Windham counties. Snowfall rates may approach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times Sunday night into Monday, significantly reducing visibility.

Road conditions will become dangerous Sunday evening.

Interstates 84 and 91, along with I-291 and Route 6, are likely to turn snow-covered overnight, with blowing snow limiting visibility in open areas near Vernon, Willimantic, and Putnam. Eversource Energy warned that 50 mph wind gusts combined with heavy, wet snow increase the risk of downed wires and localized power outages.

Residents should complete errands before late Sunday and prepare emergency supplies in case of outages. Strong winds may continue into Monday afternoon, prolonging travel impacts even after snowfall rates begin to ease.

Snow and wind will taper before daybreak Tuesday, and the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday.
