Boston, Massachusetts – Slippery highways and icy overpasses could slow the Friday evening commute across southern New England as snow and freezing rain move in by 10 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday for northern Connecticut, northwest Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts along and south of the Massachusetts Turnpike. Forecasters expect a coating to 3 inches of snow and sleet, along with up to 0.2 inches of ice accretion.
The mix will stretch from Hartford, Vernon and Putnam in Connecticut through Springfield, Worcester, Northampton and Norwood in Massachusetts, and into Providence County and western Kent County in Rhode Island. Ice accumulation on untreated roads, bridges and ramps could make travel hazardous, especially along I-90, I-91 and I-84 during peak drive times.
Power outages are possible where ice weighs down tree limbs and utility lines. Transportation officials urge drivers to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and avoid unnecessary travel Friday night. Keep phones charged and have flashlights ready in case of outages.
The advisory runs through early Saturday morning, and additional alerts could follow if icing intensifies overnight.
