Harrisburg, Pa. – After weeks of dry conditions, the Mid-Atlantic will finally see measurable rainfall this week, with multiple systems expected to cross the region. Drivers and commuters should prepare for wet roads beginning Tuesday morning, with a second round of heavier showers possible by Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, the first wave of rain is expected Tuesday, producing light to moderate totals across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. A stronger system could bring a more widespread soaking on Thursday, though river levels are not anticipated to rise significantly due to recent dry weather and low streamflows.

Localized rainfall totals may exceed an inch in parts of central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland through midweek. Urban areas such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., could see brief periods of ponding on streets, though flash flooding is not expected.

Residents are urged to allow extra travel time during the morning commute, avoid standing water on roads, and secure outdoor items before the heavier rain arrives later in the week.

Forecasters note the rain is much-needed, and while not a drought-buster, it will help ease dry soil conditions. Additional updates will be issued if Thursday’s system trends stronger.
