Harris County, TX – A Harris County mother has been arrested and charged after investigators ruled the death of her 9-year-old daughter a homicide.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, homicide detectives and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team arrested Gbemisola G. Akayinode on Thursday for the alleged murder of her daughter, Oluwasikemi Akayinode.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined the cause of death to be hyperthermia, meaning the child died from extreme heat exposure. Authorities said the incident occurred on July 1, 2025, when deputies responded to the 1200 block of Mayo Shell Road and found the girl unresponsive inside a vehicle.

Detectives allege that Akayinode left her daughter inside the parked car with the back windows partially down while she went to work nearby. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Akayinode, born November 17, 1988, has been charged with felony murder and is being held at the Harris County Jail, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Authorities are continuing the investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
