Houston, TX – A 2015 cold case homicide in the Houston area has led to new charges against a man already in state custody, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

HCSO Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced that Marcus Dwayne Moffett, 29, has been charged with Capital Murder in the 2015 shooting death of Kavonte Kion Reescano, 21.

According to investigators, on October 16, 2015, deputies responded to the 7800 block of Howell-Sugar Land Road, where they found Reescano suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Detectives continued to investigate the case for years before developing new leads that connected Moffett to the crime. Officials said Moffett was already in the custody of the Texas Department of Corrections on unrelated charges when the new warrant was issued.

Authorities have not released details about what evidence led to the new charge.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the homicide division continues to review cold cases with renewed focus, using updated forensic methods and information sharing between agencies.
