Livingston, Montana – Strong crosswinds and elevated fire danger are expected to impact parts of south-central Montana from Saturday night through Sunday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Billings, gusty winds will intensify tonight and continue into Sunday, particularly across the western foothills. The highest risk area includes Livingston, Nye, and nearby communities, where there is a 70% chance of wind gusts reaching or exceeding 50 mph. Peak gusts in the region may range from 45 to 60 mph.

These winds are expected to create hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles such as semis, campers, and vehicles towing trailers. Motorists traveling along Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 191, and Montana Highway 78 should be prepared for sudden and strong crosswinds, particularly in open and exposed areas.

In addition to travel concerns, low relative humidity combined with warm temperatures and gusty winds will keep elevated grass fire danger in place through Sunday. Lower elevations face the highest risk, with temperatures expected to climb into the 50s and 60s and humidity levels dropping into the 15–30% range.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and prevent sparks from vehicles or equipment. Even small ignition sources could lead to rapidly spreading grass fires under these conditions.

Winds are forecast to gradually ease later Sunday, but fire weather concerns may linger until humidity levels recover.

These conditions are particularly important for weekend travelers, commercial drivers, ranchers, and outdoor workers, as both travel safety and fire prevention will be critical.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official National Weather Service updates and consider delaying travel if driving high-profile vehicles during the strongest wind periods.
