Bel Air, MD – A 69-year-old inmate at the Harford County Detention Center died Saturday, December 27, 2025, following multiple cardiac-related medical emergencies while in custody, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the inmate, identified as George Kenney of Bel Air, had been serving an 18-month sentence for a driving while impaired conviction from August 2025. Kenney was first booked into the detention center on November 1.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Kenney suffered his first cardiac emergency on December 16 while housed with other inmates. Correctional Deputies and medical staff performed CPR and lifesaving measures until emergency crews arrived and transported him to a hospital. He was released back to the detention center four days later.

On December 20, Kenney suffered a second cardiac incident, requiring another emergency response and hospitalization. He was released again before suffering a third episode on December 27, which proved fatal despite additional lifesaving efforts.

Detectives with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division are conducting a routine inquiry into the death. Preliminary findings indicate the cause was medical and not related to foul play.

Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler commended detention and medical staff, stating they “acted quickly and professionally during multiple medical emergencies.” Gahler added, “Mr. Kenney’s medical condition was not survivable. I am proud of their efforts and their commitment to the safety and care of every person entrusted to our custody.”

Officials confirmed Kenney’s was the only in-custody death reported at the Harford County Detention Center in 2025. No further information was available as of Saturday evening.
