Ellsworth, ME – Coastal Hancock County residents are being urged to prepare for potentially hazardous travel conditions as a winter storm system approaches Downeast Maine late Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning for Coastal Hancock County, including Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Bucksport, Castine, and Orland. Forecasters say 5 to 7 inches of snow are possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph, which could further reduce visibility along coastal and elevated roadways.

The watch means conditions are favorable for significant winter weather, though exact snowfall totals and impacts could still change as the storm develops. Snow is expected to overspread the region overnight, potentially leading to slick, snow-covered roads by early Wednesday.

Travel impacts are most likely during the Wednesday morning commute, especially on secondary roads and untreated surfaces. Gusty winds could also cause areas of blowing snow, making driving conditions worse at times, particularly near the coast and open areas.

Residents planning early-morning travel are encouraged to allow extra time, slow down, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Officials stress the importance of staying informed, as the watch could be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning if confidence increases.

Motorists are advised to check updated forecasts and road conditions before heading out. Statewide travel updates are available through NewEngland511.org.

Weather conditions are expected to evolve quickly overnight, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued later Tuesday.
