Grand Island, NE – A Grand Island man is in custody after allegedly firing at Nebraska State Patrol troopers during a Tech Crimes investigation early Wednesday morning, officials confirmed.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the shooting occurred around 6:40 a.m. at a residence on East Oklahoma Avenue in Grand Island. Investigators with the NSP Technical Crimes Unit were serving a search warrant related to a child pornography investigation when the incident began.

Preliminary reports indicate the resident, identified as 43-year-old Justin Jelinek, allegedly fired a gun from inside the home as officers approached. A trooper returned fire, but no one was struck by gunfire, authorities said.

After the exchange, Jelinek allegedly barricaded himself inside before SWAT negotiators issued repeated commands for him to surrender. Roughly ten minutes later, Jelinek exited the home voluntarily and was taken into custody without further incident.

He has been booked into the Hall County Jail, and charges are pending as the investigation remains active.

The Nebraska State Patrol expressed gratitude that no troopers were injured, adding that all officers involved “will be going home safely today.”
