Hall County, GA – A Sunday afternoon dog walk turned deadly in Hall County when a dispute at Simpson Park led to a fatal shooting, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). Deputies confirmed one man is dead and another is in custody following the December 21 incident.
According to HCSO, deputies responded around 3:30 p.m. to Simpson Park off Ga. 53/Dawsonville Highway after reports of gunfire. The 70-year-old victim was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. His dog also died in the incident.
Deputies say the alleged shooter, a 52-year-old Gainesville man, initially stayed at the scene but later left in his SUV. He was stopped and detained by deputies about 15 minutes later on Simpson Park Road. Investigators worked into Sunday evening collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Preliminary reports indicate the two men, who did not know one another, were walking their dogs when the animals began fighting. The suspect allegedly shot the victim’s dog and then the victim. The suspect remains in custody as charges are finalized, HCSO said.
Authorities plan to release the names of both men, who are from the Gainesville area, on Monday, Dec. 22.
