Halifax, Va. – An EF-1 tornado briefly touched down northeast of Cluster Springs late Thursday afternoon, leaving a trail of damaged trees and minor structural impacts in Halifax County.

According to the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, the tornado struck just before 5 p.m., toppling between 50 and 100 trees and damaging the outer wall of a home. Winds in EF-1 tornadoes typically range from 86 to 110 mph, strong enough to snap large trees and cause moderate building damage.

Residents in the Cluster Springs area reported downed limbs blocking local roads, though no injuries have been confirmed. Utility crews worked into the evening to restore power in scattered outages across Halifax County. Emergency officials urged drivers to use caution around debris-covered roads and to avoid touching any fallen power lines.

Southside Virginia has seen unsettled weather this week, and forecasters caution additional strong storms remain possible into the weekend. Officials remind residents to keep cell phones charged and stay weather-aware for rapidly changing conditions.

Warnings remain in effect for scattered thunderstorms across southern Virginia through Saturday.
