HAINES, AK — Alaska’s winter grip tightens again as a fresh surge of Pacific moisture targets Haines, Lutak, and Mud Bay early Monday morning. The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a Winter Weather Advisory calling for 3 to 6 inches of snow, with the heaviest rates expected between 5 a.m. and noon.
Forecasters say this weak but moisture-rich low will move north from the Gulf, spreading snow showers into the northern Panhandle before midday. Snowfall rates may briefly exceed half an inch per hour, making for slick and snow-packed roads during the morning commute. Visibility could drop quickly in bursts of heavier snow, particularly along the Haines Highway and through low-lying coastal zones near Lutak Inlet.
Drivers are urged to use caution and allow extra travel time. Even minor elevation gains could see faster accumulations as cooler air funnels down from interior valleys. By late afternoon, snowfall should taper as the system weakens and shifts east toward the Canadian border.
