Haines, Alaska – Heavy snow continues to impact northern Southeast Alaska overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions across Haines, Klukwan, and Hyder as fluctuating winds and temperatures keep precipitation locked in a wintry pattern. Residents and travelers should be prepared for difficult conditions through Tuesday morning, especially near Lynn Canal.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Haines Borough and Klukwan until Tuesday morning, with additional snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches expected. The City of Hyder remains under a winter storm warning until early Tuesday, where up to two more inches of heavy, wet snow could fall before precipitation tapers. Increased southeasterly winds overnight have helped maintain a cold air pool, allowing snow to persist despite brief periods of rain or mixed precipitation.

Travel by land, sea, and air may be difficult as snow bands move through the region overnight and into Tuesday. Winds are expected to weaken Tuesday, which could allow heavier snow showers to redevelop, leading to highly variable snowfall totals across the northern panhandle. Local roads, ferry operations, and aviation routes may experience delays or disruptions.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit travel if possible, secure property, and keep emergency supplies on hand. Winter storm warnings remain in effect through Tuesday morning, and additional updates are possible as conditions evolve.
