La Paz, MX – A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck early Friday morning in the Gulf of California, shaking communities across Baja California Sur and Sonora, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at 12:04 UTC (5:04 a.m. local time), centered about 75 kilometers (46 miles) north-northeast of Santa Rosalía, Mexico, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Preliminary USGS data indicates the event was reviewed and confirmed with moderate shaking intensity.

Residents in coastal towns along the Gulf of California reported feeling light-to-moderate shaking, though no significant damage or injuries had been reported as of early Friday morning. The Community Internet Intensity Map from USGS showed reports extending from southern Sonora to northern Baja California Sur.

Seismologists note that the region—located along the Gulf of California Rift Zone—is known for frequent moderate quakes due to the tectonic interaction between the Pacific and North American plates.

Authorities continue to monitor the area for aftershocks, though none of notable magnitude have been reported within the first few hours following the initial tremor.

No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
