Tampa, Florida – Beachgoers along Florida’s west-central coast are urged to stay out of the water today as dangerous marine conditions create a high risk of rip currents along Tampa Bay area beaches, posing a serious threat to swimmers.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a significant risk of hazardous, potentially life-threatening rip currents is expected through tonight. Swimming is not recommended, even for experienced swimmers, as strong currents can quickly pull people away from shore. Beach patrols have raised warning flags, and conditions may worsen at times with persistent onshore flow.

The greatest risk extends along Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Sarasota county beaches, including Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Anna Maria Island, and Siesta Key. Rip currents can form suddenly and may be difficult to spot, especially under cloudy or choppy conditions.

Officials urge anyone visiting the coast to heed posted beach warnings and follow guidance from local lifeguards. If caught in a rip current, swimmers should remain calm, float to conserve energy, and swim parallel to the shore to escape the current rather than fighting against it.

Conditions are expected to remain hazardous through the day and into the evening. Additional marine advisories are possible if winds and surf remain elevated. Beachgoers are encouraged to check the latest local beach reports before heading out and consider staying on shore until conditions improve.
