Houston, TX – Heavy rainfall is forecast to drench southeast Texas through Friday evening, bringing a heightened risk of flash flooding across the Gulf Coast and disrupting travel on key highways.

According to the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office, a Flood Watch remains in effect through 7 p.m. Friday for areas south of I-10 and west of I-45. Forecasters warn that 2 to 5 inches of rain are likely, with localized totals reaching up to 9 inches in counties including Matagorda, Jackson, Wharton, and Fort Bend.

Major roadways such as I-69, Highway 59, and segments of US 290 could see ponding or full lane closures due to rapid water accumulation. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid low-lying areas and turn around if encountering flooded roads.

Moderate flooding risk is centered around Matagorda and Jackson counties, with slight risk expanding to Houston and areas east by Friday morning. River gauges near the Tres Palacios, San Bernard, and Navidad Rivers may briefly exceed action stages, though widespread river flooding is not expected.

Residents should stay alert, especially in flood-prone neighborhoods. Keep emergency kits ready and monitor updates at weather.gov/houston. Avoid travel during peak rainfall periods when possible and never drive through high water.
