New Orleans, Louisiana – A minor offshore earthquake registered in the Gulf of Mexico early Monday morning, but no immediate impacts to coastal communities have been reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 3.9 quake occurred at 2:22 a.m. UTC (late Sunday night local time) about 160 miles south of the Louisiana coastline at a depth of 10 kilometers. Shaking at this magnitude is typically too weak to be widely felt on land and rarely causes damage.
There have been no reports of shaking across major Gulf Coast cities including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Gulfport. Offshore earthquakes of this size are not uncommon and are often only detected by seismic instruments.
No tsunami threat has been issued, and no disruptions to marine operations or coastal infrastructure have been reported.
Residents along the Gulf Coast do not need to take action, but seismic activity will continue to be monitored. Updates will be provided if additional tremors are detected.
