LAKE CHARLES, La. – A tropical wave pushing westward across the Atlantic could strengthen into a tropical depression later this week, raising concerns for the Gulf Coast heading into the weekend.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the system is producing widespread showers and thunderstorms south of the Cabo Verde Islands. Forecasters say environmental conditions are favorable for gradual development, with a 30% chance of formation over the next 48 hours and a 70% chance within the next week.
The wave is expected to track west to west-northwest at about 15 mph, crossing the central Atlantic through the weekend. While the system is still far from the United States, forecasters are urging Gulf Coast residents, including those in Louisiana and Texas, to monitor updates closely as the track becomes clearer.
Emergency managers recommend checking hurricane kits, charging devices, and reviewing evacuation routes in case the system strengthens and nears land next week. Even before land impacts, rip currents and rough surf could develop along the Atlantic coast.
Advisories will be updated daily, with the next major outlook expected Thursday.
