Greensboro, NC – A 71-year-old inmate was found dead early Tuesday morning at the Guilford County Detention Center, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).
Sheriff Danny H. Rogers reported that at approximately 6:53 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, detention staff discovered Mr. Tracey Johnson unresponsive inside his assigned cell.
According to the sheriff’s office, medical staff immediately began life-saving efforts while Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the facility. Paramedics arrived around 7:05 a.m., but despite resuscitation attempts, Johnson was pronounced deceased at approximately 7:39 a.m.
Detectives with the Major Crimes Investigative Unit and the local Medical Examiner are investigating the death. As of Tuesday, no foul play is suspected, and the case remains active. Johnson’s next of kin has been notified, according to GCSO.
Records show Johnson had been arrested by Greensboro Police on March 8, 2025, on charges including felony habitual breaking and entering and three counts of misdemeanor attempted breaking and entering. He was being held under a $20,000 secured bond pending his next court date.
