Midland, Texas – Drivers across West Texas could face sudden visibility drops to near zero by mid-morning Friday as strong winds kick up widespread blowing dust across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a Blowing Dust Advisory and Wind Advisory are both in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Friday. Northeast winds will range from 30 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, reducing visibility to as low as one-quarter mile in some areas.
The highest risk stretches across the Permian Basin, including Midland, Odessa, Andrews, and Big Spring, as well as southeastern New Mexico communities like Hobbs and Carlsbad. Major routes such as I-20, Highway 285, and Highway 54 could see sudden dust bursts, especially near open fields and construction zones.
High-profile vehicles face an increased risk of losing control in strong crosswinds. Blowing dust may also lead to rapid road closures if visibility drops quickly.
Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible, keep headlights on, and avoid stopping in travel lanes. Secure loose outdoor items ahead of the winds.
Hazardous conditions will persist through Friday evening, and additional advisories could follow if winds intensify.
