Morris, IL – A routine traffic stop along Interstate 80 in Grundy County allegedly led to the seizure of a large quality of suspected cocaine and the arrest of two Peoria men.

According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, the stop happened Tuesday on westbound Interstate 80 in the Morris area after deputies with the Proactive Unit observed alleged traffic violations. During the stop, authorities said deputies developed probable cause to search the vehicle, where they reportedly located a significant amount of suspected narcotics.

Officials said investigators allegedly seized approximately 2,160 grams, or about two kilograms, of suspected cocaine, along with a smaller additional amount of suspected cocaine and roughly 11 grams of cannabis. The drugs were reportedly recovered as part of what authorities described as an ongoing effort to disrupt illegal narcotics trafficking through the region.

James Coats, 32, and John Peyton Jr., 44, both of Peoria, Illinois, were allegedly arrested at the scene. Authorities said both men were charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 900 grams of cocaine. They were transported to the Grundy County Jail, where they await pretrial release hearings.

The sheriff’s office noted the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details could emerge as the case progresses through the legal system. Officials continue to emphasize that all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Law enforcement agencies across Grundy County have increasingly focused on major highways like Interstate 80 as key corridors for alleged drug trafficking activity, citing safety concerns for surrounding communities.
