Grundy County, IL – Authorities are alerting residents about a string of driveway sealcoating scams reported across Grundy County over the past two weeks, involving fraudulent contractors who either demand large payments for incomplete work or allegedly use the job as a cover for burglary.

According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, two primary scam tactics have emerged. In one version, suspects allegedly perform a substandard sealcoating job, then claim additional work is needed—typically on concrete—and request significant payment before disappearing. The sheriff’s office noted the scammers often falsely claim affiliation with legitimate companies.

In the second version, scammers reportedly return to “correct” their previous work. While one individual distracts the homeowner, another allegedly enters the home and commits burglary. These incidents have led authorities to suspect coordinated criminal behavior under the guise of home improvement.

Witnesses have described two vehicles involved: a black pickup truck with a sealcoating tank and a tan pickup with a black bed cover. Both vehicles are reportedly occupied by middle-aged Hispanic males, according to the sheriff’s report.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be cautious of unsolicited offers for driveway work. Anyone approached by individuals offering such services or who believes they’ve been a victim is asked to contact the sheriff’s office or local police.

Officials also stressed that the image included in their social media alert is AI-generated and not an actual depiction of any suspect, emphasizing it was used solely for visual attention.
