Morris, Illinois – Boaters planning to hit Heidecke Lake this week will be turned away as water levels have dropped more than two feet below safe navigation thresholds, forcing a shutdown of the spring boating season.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the lake will remain closed beyond its typical Tuesday opening due to water levels sitting near 506 feet above sea level. Safe boating conditions generally require levels of at least 508 feet, with optimal conditions closer to 510 feet.

The closure marks the first time since the site transitioned from a power plant cooling lake in 2007 that water levels have fallen too low for safe watercraft use. The lake, located near Morris in Grundy County, remains a popular destination for anglers and recreational boaters across northern Illinois.

Drought conditions are driving the issue. The National Weather Service reports the region is running 8 to 15 inches below normal precipitation since early October, with last year ranking among the driest on record. Extended heat, including 29 days above 90 degrees, has accelerated water loss across lakes and rivers.

Officials say the lake will reopen once levels recover, with options under review if dry conditions continue. Visitors should check updates before traveling, as additional access restrictions could remain in place.
