Morehead City, NC – A fast-moving winter system is bringing rain, a wintry mix, and pockets of light snow to eastern North Carolina today, with the greatest accumulation potential across the inland coastal plain from Greenville to Williamston and Plymouth.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, rain will transition to a wintry mix by early afternoon, spreading from northwest to southeast. Areas in Martin, Pitt, and Washington counties could see under 1 inch of snow, with isolated pockets of 1–2 inches where the transition occurs earlier. Farther south and east—including New Bern, Jacksonville, and the Crystal Coast—little to no accumulation is expected.

Snow may struggle to stick through daylight, but temperatures will fall rapidly late this afternoon and evening. Forecast data shows readings sliding into the upper 20s across most inland communities by early Tuesday morning.

With wet roads and snowmelt lingering, black ice is expected to be the primary hazard for the Tuesday morning commute. NWS officials warn that bridges and overpasses will freeze first, and slick spots may not be visible until drivers are already on them.

A timeline from the agency shows the wintry mix beginning around 2–3 p.m. for inland areas, with snow chances peaking between 4–9 p.m. before tapering off overnight.

Drivers should reduce speed and use caution tonight and early Tuesday, especially on untreated roads, shaded areas, and elevated surfaces.
