Greeneville, Tennessee – A fast-moving severe thunderstorm is targeting southeastern Greene County this afternoon, bringing 60 mph wind gusts, penny-size hail, and a risk of tornadoes as it tracks east at 20 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 1:45 p.m. EDT, with radar indicating the storm’s location just 8 miles southwest of Greeneville as of 1:01 p.m. The warning covers Camp Creek, Cedar Creek, and surrounding areas.
Residents are urged to seek shelter immediately as the storm could damage roofs, siding, and trees, and may produce isolated tornadoes. Wind gusts of 60 mph are strong enough to knock out power lines or send loose objects airborne.
Emergency managers advise moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and to remain alert for any tornado developments. If you see a funnel cloud or receive a tornado alert, head to a basement or small central room without windows.
This storm could mark one of the stronger early September events for the region. Stay tuned for updates and additional warnings that may be issued as conditions evolve.
