Greenville, SC – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of the North Carolina mountains and foothills as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain redevelops late Thursday night into Friday morning, according to the US National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg.
The advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Friday, covering areas north of Interstate 40, including Boone, Asheville, and Hickory. Forecasters expect snow and sleet totals up to ¾ inch and ice accumulations up to 0.1 inch, with slightly higher amounts in higher elevations.
Hazardous travel conditions are likely, particularly during the Friday morning commute, as untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick. The weight of snow and ice could also lead to isolated power outages from downed branches or lines.
Areas south of I-40, including much of the Piedmont, are expected to remain cold and mostly rain-free, with temperatures just above freezing. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check 511 for updated road conditions before heading out.
